The Value of Doing Nothing

Today, take a minute (or more) and pay attention to how you measure your day.

My ability to focus has been less than stellar lately.

I’ve discovered that I measure my day on how focused and productive I am.

When I get little done — I label that a bad day and when I do everything on my list — I label that a good day.

That’s become my only criteria. Today, I saw a post somewhere that said,

“Instead of measuring your day on productivity, how about measuring it on presence.”

Isn’t it true that our society has wired our brains to base pretty much everything on productivity?

Are we learning?

Are we thinking?

Are we working?

Are we achieving?

This brings me to one of my favorite childhood heroes — Winnie the Pooh. Throughout the series, Pooh exclaims the joys of doing nothing.

He says, “Never underestimate the value of doing nothing,” and “Sometimes the best thing to do is nothing.”

I believe many of us feel our value is based on our productivity.

Let’s allow our value to be based on our joy, our ability to be present, and our willingness to allow ourselves just to be.
